About

Mark Larson's work is about the joy of painting. The result is a play on the mind and senses with a desire to please the eye. It’s about application, brush stroke, color transformation, form, balance through harmony and rhythm. A culmination of the visual; experiencing the joys of art through paint.

Imagery is appropriated from art history, photography and nature. Oil paint is the medium, applied to anything of interest which may alter one’s perception from the original: on canvas, furniture, bowls, logs, floor cloths and refrigerators.

Mark has had multiple collaborations over the years, notably with furniture designer Dan Cramer, a graduate from Cranbrook Academy.  cramerstudio.com/collaborations

A professional artist for over 50 years, Mark has gained an international reputation. He has lived, worked and taught in the United States, Europe and Mexico. His work has won numerous awards and has been covered by television and print media worldwide.

“Mark Larson’s painted, sculptural-furniture marks a turning point in the career of the Minneapolis based artist. What makes his appropriations from Matisse, Van Gogh, Braque and others brilliant is Larson’s consummate brushwork and craft. Each of there images is modified and meticulously fit to it’s new format, then brushed on in sumptuous colors sealed under glowing layers of hand-buffed lacquer. As durable as they are beautiful, Larson’s sculptures can work like furniture or hold their own as painted sculpture."
